Kore Changes

Honouring change in the lives of individuals, families, organizations and communities

The story of Kore has many faces. A glance would demonstrate an abundance of power-over stories, involving the manipulative abduction of a young woman by a man who chooses her for wife in the Underworld. A more careful look will reveal a story of power from within, involving the dynamic interplay of sacred passage, untamed spirit, love and ritual.

The fact that Kore can represent power-over and power-within structures gives us the opportunity to choose. Which myth will you play out? That opportunity to choose gives us the power to continue or to change old patterns of oppression, the courage to embody our path as we know it needs to be, and the embrace our rites of passage.

The symbols that occur throughout the Kore myths are similar to the passages we experience as we move through life. The descent to the cave or underworld followed by a change of name and union is classic sequence of passage and rebirth. Kore's shift from maiden to Queen is metaphoric display of the power we can choose to embrace should we honour our passage and the divinity within. Her role as daughter of Demeter on Earth and ritual-bringer in the Underworld is a reminder of our inter-connection and responsibility in both worlds.

KoreEmbracing the energy of Kore within my work is a means of honouring the stages of change as we journey, affirming our power within a culture that struggles for power-over and connecting the worlds through love and ritual.
